Before we delve into our top tips for better eye health, let’s explore why eye health is so important. As with any other organ in your body like the liver, kidneys, or heart, your eyes are susceptible to stress and injury over time, diminishing their full potential.
As you grow older, your eyes will change just like everything else in your body. The problem is, many people don’t consider prioritizing eye health until they’ve noticed these changes, and in that case, it could be too late.

1.Enjoy an Eye-Supporting Diet
Studies have shown that people could reduce their chances of vision loss by 25% by simply consuming the appropriate quantities of required nutrients. 2.Keep Hydrated
Did you know that many people get less thirsty in cold weather? Because of this, it’s relatively easy to become dehydrated in the winter. Shocking, right? Proper hydration helps with tear production, which will keep you from experiencing dry, itchy, and burning eyes. If you find it hard to keep hydrated in the colder months, try having a mug of non-caffeinated tea within reach.
3.Get the Shut Eye You Need

4.Avoid Dry Air
Dry air is a problem in the winter due to a lack of humidity and forced-air heating systems. Try using seat warmers instead of blowing dry air into your eyes when you drive, and invest in a humidifier for your home to keep your eyes comfortable and healthy.
5.Don’t Rub Your Eyes
With the Coronavirus Pandemic, we’ve all become hyperaware of how often we touch our faces. In fact, it’s been reported that the average person touches their face 23 times per hour! To protect our immune systems AND eye health, we’ve got to cut down on rubbing our faces and eyes. Here’s why: When you rub your eyes, you are introducing a whole host of bacteria and viruses into them. And on that note, it’s not a great idea to share towels with others in your household for the very same reason.
6.Get Out In the Fresh Air
We’ve talked about the mental health benefits of getting out in nature, but did you know fresh air is also great for eye health? Because your eyes lack their own oxygen supply mechanism, fresh air supplies oxygen to the corneas in your eyes. So, next time you go out into nature for a grounding session, make sure your eyes absorb as much fresh, clean air as possible.
7.Be Intentional With Screen Time
Aside from causing back problems and “text neck,” our obsession with screen time can do significant damage to the health of our eyes.
Excessive use of technology can cause the following eye problems:
- Eye-strain
- Blurry vision
- Dry, itchy eyes that you can’t stop rubbing
- Issues with focusing
To avoid technology-related eye-strain try the following solutions:
- Take blink breaks where you close your eyes for 5-10 seconds to allow them to rest and relubricate.
- Try the 20-20-20 rule. Rest your eyes every 20 minutes by gazing 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.
We know it can sound hypocritical to suggest cutting down screen time when you are reading this on your phone, laptop, or tablet, but it’s all about being more intentional about the time you spend on technology.
If you find yourself mindlessly scrolling out of habit, try setting your technology down and going for a walk. If you are learning, growing, and improving yourself with said technology—that’s a good use of screen time.
